A New Study : For Chronic Insomnia, Undergoing Psychotherapy is Better Than Using Medicines


Do you suffer from chronic insomnia? Be careful; don’t just try some sleeping pills since there is no sufficient proof of using drugs to make you sleep. In a new study in May 2016, The American College of Physicians suggest that those with sleeping troubles should undergo a method of psychotherapy in order to restart the patterns of sleeping before using drugs such as sleeping pills. 


The experts say that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is needed especially by those who have chronic insomnia. The therapy mixes talk therapy, education and behavioral inventions. Adding drugs is the option only when CBT doesn’t work.

Finding the behavioral factors which lead to poor sleep should be done rather than finding medical conditions which probably result in insomnia such as prostate gland enlargement, sleep apnea, etc. CBT has long-term effects to patients with chronic insomnia since it teaches them how to deal with the symptoms of insomnia and difficulties. In addition, there is no side effect of using medicine for insomnia in the long term since medications are prescribed no longer than 10-14 days to avoid dependence. 

A good sleep environment should be promoted by parents to cheap children consistently as to when to go to bed and when to wake up either weekdays or weekends. 

Is There Any Other Reason for Insomnia?
There is another reason that makes someone has a sleepless night. A new study finds that sleeping in a new place will make your brain stay alert for any potential dangers. This answers the questions why, for example, many people have a poor sleep on their first night in a new location such as in a hotel. An associate professor at Brown University in Rhode Island says that the Japanese even say that “you can’t sleep if you change your pillow”. Yes, we can’t have a good sleep in a place that we are not familiar with. In the research, the left brain’s atmosphere of the participants displays bigger activity than in the right one on the first night. They were prone to wake up and become alert when sounds were played to stimulate their left hemisphere of their brain. 

Can I Use Sleep Mask to Help Me Sleep Well?
Besides the environment, in order to sleep tight you need a sleep mask that offers total blackout, or of you don’t have one you can sleep in a room that is dark enough. 
If you use sleep mask, choose a quality mask with a nose flap so that only little light come in. You may find one which makes you feel comfortable, easy to wash and doesn’t trigger allergies.
